As an avid adventurer who loves to travel and experience new places, I have often wondered how to make money while traveling the US. Wouldn’t it be great to be able to pick up and travel across the country without having to save up for it or wait until retirement?
In reality there are a ton of different ways that you can travel and make money at the same time. But I want to focus on just a few, because I believe they are the best and quite frankly the easiest.
Blogging – Your Very Own Website Dedicated to Your Travel Adventures
Much like journaling, blogging is a great way to record your travels as you build memories and experience new things. People love to read about other people’s experiences and also get an idea of what to do in certain cities across this country.
So how is a blog going to make you money? There are actually several ways that websites make money. This includes placing ads on your site, selling your own products, and affiliate commissions.
If you don’t have your own products to sell and you don’t want to have a website that is just junked up with ads, then generating income through affiliate commissions is the best strategy.
Not sure what affiliate commissions are? Read “What is Affiliate Marketing About – Can I Make Money Online?”
By partnering with companies and placing affiliate links on your website, you can earn commissions when someone clicks on the link and purchases a product. One of the biggest Affiliate Programs is Amazon. Everyone has heard of Amazon and it has virtually anything and everything for sale on it.
So you could easily place an affiliate link to a travel suitcase or backpack for example within the content of your blog and receive a nice commission. Since you are writing about your travels, you could incorporate it by doing a review of the suitcase and offering your opinion on its features and whether it’s worth buying.
Vlogging Your Adventures – For those who don’t like to write
If writing isn’t your cup of tea, then maybe vlogging would be a better fit. Vlogging is simply using videos to tell your story and capture your adventures. Most people use YouTube, but there are other platforms like Vimeo and Daily Motion.
Essentially all you do is record videos of your travels, and upload them daily or weekly to a video sharing platform like YouTube. Create a channel, gain a following and earn money!
But wait, how exactly do you make money with vlogging? Once again, there are several ways to earn money with a vlog. One way is to monetize your YouTube account. So YouTube will pay you for views…. the more people view your videos, the more money you make.
Another way to make money vlogging, is to include affiliate links in your description. So for instance, say you use a certain type of camera to film your videos. Placing an affiliate link below your video can earn you commissions when someone clicks on the link and decides to purchase that camera. This is basically the same thing you would do if you were blogging.
Once you gain a significant following (subscribers), you can do sponsored videos where companies will pay you to mention their product or service in your video.
I’ve even seen some travel vloggers simply ask for donations to help support their channel and their travels. If people really like your content, then there is a good chance they will donate a little towards your next adventure.
Fiverr – $5 a Gig Adds Up
If you have a certain skill or something worth offering to people, you can usually make a little money on Fiverr. If you aren’t familiar with Fiverr, it is basically a website where people will pay $5 for your service. So if you are good at drawing, you could offer to draw a cartoon sketch of someone’s pet and they will pay your $5.
If you are good at writing, you could write an article for someone for $5. And you can upsell if you want. So for instance, it would cost them $5 for 500 words, or $10 for 1000 words… and so on and so on.
Photographic Journal of Your Travels
This one is for those people who are good at taking photographs. Believe it or not, people will actually pay you for photographs, especially of epic sunsets on the California coast, or majestic mountain landscapes in the Rocky Mountains.
You can sell your photos online on websites like Shutterstock, Can Stock Photo, Adobe Stock, and many more. Or you can sell directly on your own website if you have one.
You could also sell your framed photos at art and craft fairs. Or ask local coffee shops and restaurants to display your photos.
We all take pictures while we are traveling in order to capture the memory or the view, so why not turn those pictures into cash!
One of my favorite ways to make money is through passive income. With this strategy, you can reap the benefits of the hard work that you put in at an earlier time and simply enjoy the moment while money flows in.
I have an entire article about passive income, that you can check out here. But essentially, generating a passive income stream will give you the ultimate freedom to travel whenever and wherever while still making money.
Conclusion – Money or Freedom? Why Not Both!
Just because you are off experiencing the craziness of Mardi Gras in New Orleans or fly-fishing in Montana, doesn’t mean you can’t be making money at the same time. Hopefully I shed some light on different types of income streams that will allow you to monetize your adventures.
Why spend all your time making money the traditional way and NEVER experiencing life? With the introduction of the online world, there is now even more ways to earn an income remotely.
